Safety performance indicators (SPIs) are important, especially in cases where accident data cannot be used. The main objective of collecting and analysing SPIs is developing groundwork for traffic safety measures, especially preventive activities. SPIs may be used to assess effectiveness of prevention programmes; they also form the background for development of regional and local road safety strategies. Time series enable monitoring of some SPIs, presenting changes in road users behaviour in some fields.
